🐾 “Just a Nail Trim”… When Routine Care Reveals the Unexpected 🐾🩺

I’ve now had this happen three times—three different homes, three different kitties, all seen for just a nail trim. And each time, a quick glimpse inside their mouth raised a red flag in my mind.

I was recently at a home for what was supposed to be just a nail trim when something caught my eye. As I was working with this sweet 3-year-old kitty, I got a quick look inside her mouth—and my medical brain instantly flagged it.

What I saw looked like stomatitis, a severe and painful inflammatory condition of the mouth that many pet owners don’t even realize their cat is suffering from.

Stomatitis causes red, swollen, and ulcerated tissue inside the mouth and around the gums. It’s incredibly painful—like having a mouth full of burning sores—and often requires full mouth extractions to bring relief.

When I gently mentioned my concern to the owner, she was completely surprised. Her cat hadn’t shown any major signs—no obvious pain, no behavioral changes. That’s the tricky thing with cats: they’re experts at hiding discomfort. I strongly recommended a vet visit.

Sure enough, the diagnosis was confirmed. That sweet baby underwent full mouth extractions and is now a whole new cat—happy, comfortable, and pain-free for the first time in who knows how long. 💛

🐾 “Just a Nail Trim”… When Routine Care Reveals the Unexpected 🐾🩺

🐾Haylee’s Vulva Makeover —!

Meet Haylee — a 10-year-old sweetheart I’ve known (and adored!) for years. Her mom is a longtime client and friend, and I always enjoy my visits with this lovely pair.

Haylee and I have a little nail trim routine: she lays down on her side, gets lots of treats from mom, and wears a muzzle just to keep things honest. She’s used to the process now and handles it like a champ. 💛

But during one of these routine “just a nail trim” visits, something wasn’t right. As Haylee rolled onto her side, I noticed a strong odor—and quickly spotted that her vulva area was red, (like flamming hot red) inflamed, and clearly uncomfortable. Since she’s a bigger girl, it’s not unusual that no one had noticed—rolling her over isn’t exactly a one-person job at home!

What I saw appeared to be a recessed (or “hooded”) vulva, a condition where excess skin folds trap moisture and bacteria, often leading to painful infections. It’s more common in spayed females and can go unnoticed for years.

I talked with her mom about what I was seeing and suggested a vet visit. Sure enough, the vet confirmed it—and said it was one of the worst cases they’d ever seen.

So Miss Haylee got herself a little “nip & tuck” ✂️✨—a vulvoplasty to remove the excess tissue and help prevent future infections. And now? She’s a brand-new girl: comfortable, infection-free, and ready for whatever life brings next. (Possibly another round of treats and belly rubs).

You never know what we’ll spot during a “just a nail trim.”That quick visit can make a big difference in your pet’s comfort and health when you work with veterinary professionals.

*A Routine Trim Turned Life-Changing***

Meet this handsome guy 😺— what started as a simple nail trim turned into something much bigger. A quick look in his mouth raised some red flags, and after a recommended vet visit, he ended up having 9 teeth removed. He now has just 3 teeth left!

Did you know cats have 30 teeth—only two fewer than humans? Imagine how tiny those must be to fit in their little mouths! Sadly, dental disease can creep in without obvious signs. This kitty had already lost several teeth on his own or only had roots left.

👉 Did you also know that approximately 50–90% of cats over the age of four have some form of dental disease? That’s right — it often starts as early as age four. 😿

Aging comes with surprises, but having a medical professional come to your home makes it easier to spot subtle changes before they become major problems. This was just a nail trim — until it wasn’t.
